Even though I haven't written much in my blog or done many reviews since summer (excluding the St. John's passion and one other coming up tomorrow), I have continued my concert-going. Unfortunately, I don't have time to write extensively about the following three events. But they were so good I needed to list them at the very least.
- A Conversation with Wynton Marsalis: Celebrating the release of the Marsalis lecture and performance video MUSIC AS METAPHOR (At Harvard on October 30, 2017)
I came away from this Marsalis interview an admirer of this great American musician and educator. Check out these videos! Music as Metaphor is available online through the Harvard University Youtube channel: hrvd.me/marsalis
- Mivos Quartet in Concert at Berklee (October 26, 2017). The Mivos Quartet is simply extraordinary. I made my way out in the rain in the middle of important deadlines just to see them play. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform in NYC and I've written about them before on this blog. This time, they played new music by Ned Rothenberg, Cabot Metz, Miran Kang, Christian Frederic Bloquet, Marti Epstein, and Brian Ferneyhough.
- Collage New Music's concert at Longy (October 15, 2017) featuring music by Aaron Helgeson, Yi Yiing Chen, Fred Lerdahl, Marti Epstein, and James Primosch. What a great concert! People need to get into new classical music because it is exhilarating and cooler than anything else you'll hear anywhere (at least in the West)! Tune your ears to these incredible new soundscapes now, or miss out on innovation.
